Irene may force doubleheader Saturday for Sox

Hurricane Irene is expected to arrive in New England this weekend.  The storm, which could be the first hurricane to make landfall in the continental United States in three years, is expected to bring heavy rain and wind to the area.

The Red Sox are scheduled to play the Athletics this weekend at Fenway (coincidentally I’m attending Saturday’s game).  The Boston Globe is reporting that the teams may play a doubleheader on Saturday to avoid a rain-out Sunday.  A rained out game on Sunday would be difficult to schedule as Oakland and Boston don’t have any common off-days the rest of the season.

There’s also concerns about the team’s return flight to Logan.  After tonight’s game at Texas, the team will be flying back but Irene is expected to be approaching the coast at that point.
